Why a British Education?
Also referred to as the National Curriculum for England, this system focusses on creativity and creating measurable, achievable goals for students. It provides a carefully structured system of assessments at every educational stage. This ensures every student, parent and child is aware of individual progress and goals, helping all children reach their potential.

British Education System
Learning Through Play
Young children learn through exploration. Everything they do as such kicking a ball, building with blocks, and painting, to singing in a group, and developing reading and writing skills is done in English and it is designed to help them understand their environment. This stage is essential and ensures children develop socially, mentally and physically.
Ages 3 – 5 | Foundation Stage | Foundation 1 and 2
Every child deserves the best early years education. Our foundation stones of learning are put in place by inspiring, caring, and experienced teachers in a wonderful setting. At BISU the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is based upon strong educational principles ensuring children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for future progress through school and life.
During these formative years of the Foundation Stage, a carefully integrated two-year programme of learning is provided which covers seven key areas:
- Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Exploration and Learning the Basics
A more structured approach to the day helps children continue their development with learning how to read, write and count in English. We still encourage children to explore and play, and discover the world around them and relate their findings in words and numbers.
Ages 5 – 7 | Key Stage 1 | Years 1 and 2
This stage consists of three core subjects Mathematics, English and Science with an addition of Computing and foundation subjects of Geography, History, Design Technology, Art, Music and Physical Education. In addition to these subjects, we also teach Swedish from Year 1 which continues through all Key Stages.
Children in Key Stage 1 are taught through a ‘topic approach’. During the first two years of Junior School life, students are encouraged to learn both practically and academically, and all work is monitored to ensure that students are making the desired progress. We encourage children to take pride in their achievements and adopt an independent and self-reliant approach to school and particular attention is given to the social and emotional development of all children.
Communication and Application of Skill
Children are naturally curious, and we encourage them to learn about things that interest them while consolidating their numeracy and literacy skills. At this stage, we teach children how to apply these basic skills to other subject areas – such as Science, Art and History.
Key Stage 2 is made up of the same core and foundation subjects covered in Key Stage 1. During Years 3 and 4 much of the work is ‘cross-curricular’, meaning that one theme is covered by several subjects. Topics are structured to allow children the freedom to explore new subjects in a stimulating way, encouraging a natural enthusiasm for more independent learning. In Year 3 the reading and spelling homework experienced in the previous year is supplemented with written work, which increases in Year 4.
Throughout Years 5 and 6 a greater degree of autonomy and independence is expected of the children, during which they are softly encouraged to accept new levels of responsibility and demonstrate leadership skills.
During the latter part of Key Stage 2, subject teaching becomes more defined especially in the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and Computing. As students enter Year 6, they are prepared for the subject-oriented approach of the Senior School and are expected to become more independent in planning and completing their studies. The level of homework increases to three half-hour sessions per week, plus spelling and nightly reading. Swedish continues throughout Key Stage 2 and in Year 6 students receive lessons in Spanish, French, and German, with one language covered per term across the year. These lessons are taught by specialist language teachers.
Our assessment team works with the students from Year 6 (Ages 10) to ensure a smooth transition from Junior School to Senior School. We predominantly do formative, on the spot, assessments which have a high impact on student learning.
Critical Thinking & Debate
As children get older we teach them to think more critically – it is at this stage that students develop a deeper knowledge and understanding across the arts, humanities, languages, and sciences. They learn how to investigate, test, and think about things rationally. At age 16 (Year 11), students take GCSE (General Certificate of Education) exams in 8-10 different subjects.
Key Stage 3
The curriculum in Key Stage 3 is designed to facilitate learners to grow independently, with the presence of hard work and perseverance. Curriculum content in core and non-core subjects frequently links to iGCSE which prepare learners in choosing their options and beginning their courses for Key Stage 4. Lessons are all pitched at curriculum standard within the Key Stage, allowing learners to develop application, analytical and meta-thinking skills in all subjects. Importantly, teachers also always offer the opportunity for more challenging and tailored learning where support is needed.
In Key Stage 3, along with the rest of the secondary school, we assess frequently during lessons each day. Deep marking in core subjects takes place once every two weeks allowing learners to respond and build on the foundations of their work. Progress checks take place frequently in Key Stage 3, whereby the class teacher takes into consideration progress over time to accumulate a milestone of the level the learner is working at.
Key Stage 4
Key Stage 4 at British International school is the first stage where students take responsibility for selecting their own curriculum pathways. After selecting five different options they want to pursue, alongside the core compulsory subjects, they begin their journey through Key Stage 4. These chosen subjects are selected through their interests, their achievements and the guidance received from the school for their future.
Over the two years, students are assessed through both their classroom work and formal assessments. Our staff are continually thinking of innovative ways to assess our students ensuring student wellbeing is our top priority. Through establishing independent self-study revision skills that evolve through our Key Stage assessments, we ensure all pupils have the necessary tools to sit their IGCSEs at the end of Year 11.
Finally, towards the end of Year 11 they are then given the opportunity to refine their interests into four subjects to be studied further in Key Stage 5. Through expert guidance from our careers counsellor, teachers and online platforms, students can begin to investigate where their future lies wherever that may be around the world. Once they have made their final choices and completed their IGCSEs in May and June they continue through to Key Stage 5.
Years 12 and 13 (SIXTH FORM): AGES 16-18. The final two years of school after the IGCSEs, prepare your child for university and the start of their careers. They choose from five further programmes of study, all of which are recognised by universities around the world:
- A Levels
- IB Diploma Programme
- IB Career-Related Programme
- BTEC Qualifications
