Welcome Mesaage from the Principal

Dr. Laura K Autar

School Principal

06th August 2022

Dear BISU Families,

I am pleased to welcome you to the 2022-2023 school year! I would like to extend a special welcome to all the new families joining BISU this year and welcome back to all of our returning families. My name is Dr. Laura K Autar and I am so excited to introduce myself as the new School Principal of British International School in Uppsala. I am truly honoured to have been selected to join BISU, which is known far and wide for its dedication to excellence, but more importantly, to children. Over the past 18 years, I have worked as a teacher and administrator, but I consider my most important job to be that of a child advocate. I will spend a lot of time with your children, getting to know their personalities, learning styles and interests. I will celebrate their successes, small and large. I will encourage them every day and let them know they are valued and have a special place in our school community.

Not only am I excited to begin working with your children, but I look forward to the work we will do together. As the old African Proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Student success is attributed to the partnership and the relationships we build within our community. It truly does take a village! Education is a joint venture and Team BISU greatly appreciates the support you provide for your children at home and at school to help them meet their learning goals. I am excited to see your children through your eyes. I cannot wait to share with you the great things they do throughout their days here at BISU. And of course I will be here to work with you should they need any help navigating any aspect of the school day.

My goal is to ensure that all children are healthy, happy and safe, so they may learn as much as they can. This has been my philosophy since I began my career teaching Gateway Prep School in the UK in 2004. I worked in Kent for five years , where I  taught third graders as a Class Teacher.  I then moved to international teaching to UAE , where I was an elementary teacher and was promoted to Head of Primary within a couple of months. I then moved to a school in Muscat as Campus Principal for  3 years and lastly in 2016 made the move to Malawi as Head of School for the last six years  and had the honour and privilege to support hundreds of diverse learners each day. But my greatest achievement comes not professionally, but personally, as I am the mother of a beautiful child: Sophia (11). People often say I treat all children in my school as if they were my own. Please know I will work tirelessly to ensure all your children have the best possible experiences while at BISU.

Once again, I am so thankful to have the opportunity to bring all that I have experienced and learned with me to your wonderful community. I look forward to getting to know you and your children. I believe that strong, direct, and open communication is best. Please do not hesitate to contact your teacher(s), or our administrative staff, if you have questions, need clarification on something, or wish to discuss the personal academic/social goals for your child. We are always pleased to meet with you for scheduled appointments or to communicate via email or telephone conference. Also, please do not hesitate to contact me, or schedule a time to meet, if you have any questions or concerns over the course of the year.

Regards,

Dr. Laura K Autar
